The Board and Advisory Members of the Anchor Program Fund Inc. met for our annual meeting via Zoom on June 23rd. At that meeting, elections were held and some of the Board positions were changed.

My son, Michael, has Microcephaly and we enrolled him in Camp Anchor when he was five years old. Now 23, Michael has developed a fulfilling social life and lifelong friendships thanks to the Town of Hempstead’s A.N.C.H.O.R Program.

As a working mother, the joys of summer have always brought with it the woes of finding childcare for my school-age children. Add to that equation the need to find summer-appropriate activities for a child with special needs. Sometimes the phrase “school’s out” makes me shake a bit.

Thanks to the efforts of many employees, parents, volunteers we kicked off A.N.C.H.O.R’s 50th Anniversary with some terrific programs and events for the entire community - and there’s much more to come!

For 40 years, Anchor Program Fund, Inc. and the Town of Hempstead have worked together to run and maintain programs and special activities/events that benefit thousands of children and adults with disabilities.

It’s hard to believe the Town of Hempstead opened Camp A.N.C.H.O.R almost 50 years ago. The camp opened in 1968 with just eight children. Today, it serves almost 900 children and adults with disabilities each summer. My daughter, Christa, and I have been involved with A.N.C.H.O.R for about 26 years.

It has been an A.N.C.H.O.R tradition for staff to line up and wave good-bye to the buses on the last day. This year, acting camp coordinator Mary Ann Hanson, A.N.C.H.O.R staff and invited guests gathered to wave HELLO!
